Last spring, Isabelle and I mapped out an adventure: biking across Indiana from the southern border to the northern tip. We began on June 21st in Jeffersonville, Indiana and wrapped up on July 3rd at Lake Michigan, Indiana, covering 458 miles along the way.
Our primary goal was to raise awareness for a cause close to our hearts: the Indiana Deaf Children Foundation (IDCF). At first, we weren’t sure which cause to support, but as the end of the school year approached, we decided to dedicate our ride to shining a light on IDCF, an organization doing vital work that many people are unaware of.
This bike adventure was about more than just physical endurance—it was about inspiring our community and educating others about the needs of deaf children. Isabelle, a dedicated social worker for K-12 students, and Amanda, a K-5 physical education teacher and high school girls’ basketball coach, both have big hearts for this mission. We believe everyone deserves the chance to live their best life, and we hoped this journey could help make a difference.
Overcoming Challenges:
The ride wasn’t without obstacles—there were stretches of deep gravel, country off-road trails, steep hills, and debris on the trails. For 12 days, we pushed ourselves beyond our limits, embracing the challenge despite some tough conditions: a heat wave, unexpected detours, and the occasional flat tire. Each obstacle became a memorable part of our adventure, reminding us of the importance of resilience.
Many people learned about IDCF through our @RideTheHoosierWay updates. Sharing this experience showed us how much impact a simple story can have. Facing the heat taught us valuable lessons in attitude, perseverance, and taking things one mile at a time.
Our Guiding Principles for the Trip:
- Attitude
- One at a time
- Adaptability
We believe there’s more than one “right” way to live, and that adaptability is a superpower. Stepping out of your comfort zone can lead to growth and unforgettable memories—because time is precious, and experiences are worth more than things.
Words of Inspiration:
Amanda wisely says, “The mind is your best friend—or your worst enemy—because your thoughts are not facts; they are habits. You are not your mind. You are the one watching it.”
Isabelle- “Every mile taught me the same thing: you don’t need to have it all figured out. You just must trust yourself and keep moving, no matter what life throws at you—on the road or off.”
We’re committed to paying it forward—believing that the more we give, the more blessings we receive. Our hope is to inspire ISD students and the broader community to embrace kindness, resilience, and the power of making a difference.
Thank you for supporting us on this journey. Let’s continue to spread awareness, positivity, and hope!
